Episode 55: Reshma Patel Is Rebuilding NYC

As immigrants to this country from India , @reshmapatelnyc and her family had to build a new life from the ground up and make every dollar work for them.

As a graduate from MIT, Reshma was an advisor to the NYC Comptrollers office for almost a decade, including during one of the City’s darkest moments, 9/11. With her passion to give back to her community and her love of finance and for her city, it is like she was born for this role.

We talk about why you have to ask women at least 7 times to run for any office, how the conversations on affordable housing, equity, and small business needs to change, how she saw modern day redlining in immigrant communities , and why we all grew up thinking we were in a post-racial America.

She explains to me what a comptroller does (because honestly, I had no idea!), where funds are really channeled during a campaign, why small donors are key to a fair election, and what type of food she feels is still not easy to get in the city that has it all.
