Episode 84: Sumana Kaluvai and Shiksha Sneha Talk Immigration and Dreamers

I've always been one to root for the #underdog, mainly because I grew up feeling like one.

When people give me names of #southasiantrailblazers I should interview for this podcast, I remind them that I'm equally interested in talking to #southasianvoices around the world who have powerful and important missions- they just need a little support sharing their stories. So when the founders of The Hidden Dream reached out to me last month, I knew I had to have them on.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m utterly confused with US #immigration and #visa laws.

The Hidden Dream was built to raise awareness of the countless struggles faced by #visa #immigrants to share resources, and to create a community to uplift immigrants who have spent several years in this country without a pathway to #citizenship .

They serve visa immigrants who are at the risk of #deportation (including visa #dreamers ,dependent visa spouses, families affected by the #greencard backlog, mixed status families and international students) by compiling and creating resources, guides, hosting workshops and support groups, providing a safe space for visa immigrants on social media, offering an annual scholarship, and creating crucial networking opportunities.

I talk to the co-founders Sumana Kaluvai and Shiksha Sneha about their personal experiences, why immigrant families are #embarrassed and #fearful to talk about the topic, how they built The Hidden Dream, and what needs to be done to change US #immigrationlaws.

This #nonprofit is one of the few platforms offering resources and support to a community of immigrants that feel as though they are in constant limbo. It is run, sourced, and researched by college and grad students who have all experienced the constant fear of deportation from a country they love and call home.

These young women are a reminder that good stories don't just come from those who have "made it". They also come from those who are still out there, fighting the good fight.
